Trying Ubuntu

Last week, I installed Ubuntu 10.10. This wasn't the first time I tried Ubuntu but the first time I gave it a real and fair try.
The first time I tried it was in 2008, when I got a new Laptop. Three hours later I uninstalled it because I coudln't get to work the wifi card of my laptop.

Now with 10.10 everything works just fine and after a couple of days of trying it out, I'll decided to switch from W7 to Ubuntu for good.
I set up dual boot, because I want to play some games and need some programs that only exist for windows, but for five days now, I haven't booted into Windows.

After setting everything up, trying everything what's there, clickin on every menu and my first time in the terminal (only experience with this is DOS prompt), I realized it's really awesome and that I gave up way too early the other times I tried it.

What OS are you using?

Lightning fast OS, anyone?

How about a 4.9mb ISO for an OS that boots in just a couple of seconds for your netbook? Sure it doesn't look very fancy nor is it anything for big video editing sessions, but I don't think it's made for that. For webbrowsing, word processing and emails it's enough, I guess. If I had a netbook, I'd give it a try.
Nice and clean, lightning fast
Reminds me of 3.11...

It's currently on version 0.7.7.0 and there is a possiblity to download the ISO for a Live-CD (and of course Live-Usb) and for a floppy (diskette! I haven't had a drive since 2004 or so).

0AD Community Game

Anyone wants to contribute to a pretty good looking PC game? Have a look at this
It's an open source game in development and I think it really gots potential!

So if you always wanted to take part in a game development and if you know C++ or JavaScript, then this is your chance!
Or at least, spread the word and help getting this game done some day. I'm looking forward to it

New week, early spring!

The weather was awesome today! I had about 15°C here, what about you?

Vienna was great, but the weather was shit ... raining all day on Friday, Saturday was freaking cold. But it's a cool city, really beautiful. And the trip was really cheap, only 30€ for travelling and 30€ for two nights in the hostel.

Not so cheap: alcohol and Mc Donald's...

Solution for the weekend riddle: The horse was going in circles

Freitag, 18. März 2011

Off for the weekend

No posts till monday, because I'm going to Vienna for the weekend.

A little riddle for you to pass the time:
A horse travels a certain distance every day. Two of its legs travel 40 miles a day and the other two legs travel almost 41 miles. The horse is completely normal, but it seems as two legs are one mile ahead at the end of each day. How is this possible?

Have a great weekend

Gestural Interface with colored gloves

Remember Minority Report?

This guy invented a cheap system of a gestural interface with just a webcam and this colored, crazy looking gloves.

Wouldn't this be cool as a handsfree controller for videogames, too?
Reminds me of this awesome UI model I've seen on TED: Check this out

Minority Report is real.

Windows Speech Recognition

Using WSR? Maybe you want to try out this addon. It improves the mouse mode by adding a grid for the screen that is big enough to get the mouse arrow where you want it to be with a single command, instead of successive commands like the standard WSR.
It also simplifies the text mode, you just have to say "A" instead of "Press A" now.
I'll give it a try when I have some time off and post a update.

Why IE 9 is late

Paul Rouget explains, why it's still not at the same level as other browsers.

I'm really happy with Firefox 4 and I'm using Chrome once in a while, but IE has, regardless of any tests, a bad reputation and I guess it will take some more time to get rid of it.

What are you using?

Killing without Killing

Today in my Criminal Law Lecture we talked about responisibilty in acting and the teacher draw the attention to this case: Teen Murder Trial Nightmare
I know, the case is old, but I find it quite interesting:
Four boys break into the house, the homeowner shoots one of them in self-defence (in the head) and one of the boys who tried to get in was charged with murder. Not the man who shot him but his accomplice.
The other two were charged as well, but as they were minors they were sent to a juvenile facility.
This is due to the Felony murder rule. From wiki:
The rule of felony murder is a legal doctrine in some common law jurisdictions that broadens the crime of murder in two ways. First, when an offender kills accidentally or without specific intent to kill in the course of an applicable felony, what might have been manslaughter is escalated to murder. Second, it makes any participant in such a felony criminally liable for any deaths that occur during or in furtherance of that felony. While there is some debate about the original scope of the rule, modern interpretations typically require that the felony be an inherently dangerous one, or one committed in an obviously dangerous manner. For this reason, the felony murder rule is often justified by its supporters as a means of deterring dangerous felonies.
I think it's unjust to charge people for crimes where there is no intention whatsoever.

Sleeping Problems?

You got them, I got them, everybody got them. How are you dealing with them?

What helps me recently is an App (Android) called Relax and Sleep (Marketlink).
There are several sounds you can listen to when you are trying to fall asleep: white noise, heartbeats, rain, thunder, city sounds, train, air conditioner, campfire, crickets and many more. My personal favorite is monotone bass. Usually it takes me (depending on my fatigue) more than 20 minutes to fall asleep when I'm in my bed, but with this app, I am away in dreamland after about 10 minutes. How do I know? Because I set a timer for 15 minutes and never noticed the end of the sound.

Another thing that might help is music of course. Maybe you could try out this playlist and the steps they recommend before you go to bed:

Guantanamo, once again

So Guantanamo is still running, despite Obama's promise to close it down within one year. Now he wants to get about three dozen of the inmates to the US to appear before a criminal court there, half of the about 170 inmates shall be sent to their home countries or somewhere else. But 50 will be kept in Guantanamo without any trial, because there is not enough evidence to bring them to court. And they're considered too dangerous to be set free. Considered with evidence that is not enough to accuse them before a court. Sure.

Motorcycle Season begins

1st of March has passed and usually this is the date, when the "pussies" get out of their hibernation and get back on their bike and make the roads unsafe again. As for me, I don't have a problem to be a winter pussy because I don't have tires for winter and don't want to get the salt off of my bike each and every time I ride.
I got a Kawasaki ZR-7, unfortunately still restricted to 34 HP till this summer. After that it'll have 75 HP.
I bought "her" last year in march used and the previous owner already did some modifications on the bike, such as changed the exhaust, changed the handlebars, headlight, braking lights and mirrors.

First blog, first start

So what's this all about? I don't know yet either ... Something about Photography, Android, Motorcycles and everything else that I'm interested in.
Maybe something about myself first of all:
I'm currently living in Prague, studying Czech Law in European Context for two semesters. It'll go on till May this year, so it's already up to the end. Then I'll go back to Munich and finish my education and then I'll hopefully get a job and won't end up as a taxt driver with over five years of university education ...
